Mater

Mater is a research platform I set up in 2022 after completing a Masters in Art & Material Histories. Mater explores the ways in which humans can rethink our relationship to the world through how we engage with materials. Mater sheds new light on material research, zooming into microbial and cellular life, analysing how certain histories led to material exploitation, and the current human & material suffering through capitalist systems. Mater explores new research into bacteria inside the human body, lifeforms below the ground, groundbreaking new material studies, dyes produced by bacteria, and the reasons why these ideas are now more important than ever.

As well as commissioning pieces of writing, I also interview makers and researchers for the Stories section of the website.

Mater is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
